5.2 Quake January 22nd, 10:58 p.m. (GMT -6)
A 5.2 magnitude earthquake occurred just 14 minutes ago 39 miles south of San Jose, Guatemala, the Nicaraguan Institute for Territorial Studies (INETER) reported.
The quake occurred at a shallow depth of 12 km below the epicenter near San Jose, Municipio de San José, Departamento de Escuintla, Guatemala, late at night on Friday, January 22, 2021, at 10:58 p.m. local time. The exact extent, epicenter, and depth of the quake can be changed within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or when other agencies release their report.
A second report was later published by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC), which also listed a 5.2 magnitude earthquake. A third agency, the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake with a magnitude of 5.0.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused significant damage, but was likely felt by many people as a slight vibration in the area of the epicenter.
