TUCSON, Arizona (AP) – Antonio Phillips returned to an early interception after 53 yards for a touchdown, Drew Plitt scored two hits and Ball State defeated the No. 19 shorthanded San Jose State 34-13 in the Arizona Bowl.
The state of San Jose has been forced to play without its two coordinators and Mountain West Conference of the Year player of the year, Cade Hall, due to COVID-19 and other issues.
The Cardinals took advantage and quickly went into the offensive after Phillips’ interception 27-0 in the first quarter.
The Central American champions stood in the second half but had four interceptions to win their first bowl game in 10 attempts.
