Media advice: Volunteers put the community into community service

Have fun and do good while spending time in beautiful outdoor spaces

The Department of Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services encourages volunteers to pre-register for the following socially distant outdoor volunteer events:


Martin Luther King Day in San Tomas

Alum Rock Trail Crew

  • Every second Saturday through June

Annual cutting events in the municipal rose garden

  • Friday 15th January
    • 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.
    • 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Saturday 16th January
  • Sunday 17th January



Spaces will continue to be available for volunteers to attend these upcoming outdoor events.

The volunteers’ tasks include cleaning and beautifying San Tomas Park, pruning the 3,500 roses in the municipal rose garden, and learning to hike and restore things while hiking the Alum Rock Trail.

At all event sessions, volunteers must follow current COVID-19 safety protocol measures such as face covering, social distancing, and symptom testing.

Volunteers are given all the necessary tools and training, and are asked to bring a water bottle, snacks, and closed shoes.
