Is San Jose State Breaking COVID Guidelines?

Is San Jose State’s key plan in violation of Santa Clara County’s orders?

The Spartans (6-0) won the Mountain West Championship against Boise State on Saturday. The game was played in Las Vegas because the state of San Jose is prevented from playing home games in Santa Clara County due to the county’s coronavirus restrictions that prohibit sports and other large gatherings.

The county’s coronavirus restrictions extend to travel as well. Those traveling to the county must be quarantined for 10 days upon their return to the county. And that’s a potential problem.

San Jose State en route to the Arizona Bowl

San Jose State will play at the Arizona Bowl on December 31st. That’s 12 days after the MWC title game. Due to the brief turnaround coupled with the county’s restrictions, the county health department is investigating the post-San Jose state championship itinerary.

From the San Jose Mercury News:

School spokesman Kenneth Mashinchi said Monday evening that SJSU based its itinerary on county guidelines that allowed players and staff living outside of Santa Clara county to leave immediately after landing, rather than allowing 10 days in quarantine put.

However, [county executive Dr. Jeff Smith] Everyone who has traveled to the county from Las Vegas is said to be quarantined “without exception” for 10 days.

“You shouldn’t be with other people; You should isolate yourself, ”he said, adding that it is also wrong to meet family members for the holidays. “Celebration doesn’t meet those criteria,” said Smith.

A strictly enforced 10-day isolation and quarantine period for each team member would mean the team could not meet or practice until the day before they depart for the bowl game on December 30th.

Possible punishment from the district?

If the county determines that the state of San Jose is violating instructions, it can be disciplined. The Mercury News is even raising the possibility – though it sounds extreme – that the health department could prevent the team from traveling to the bowl game.

The story goes on

The state of San Jose traveled back to campus so players could take a few days off and possibly see family members instead of driving straight from Las Vegas to Tucson and spending Christmas en route. The Spartans haven’t been on campus since the severe restrictions imposed by Santa Clara earlier this month. The ban on contact sports has forced SJSU, Stanford, and the San Francisco 49ers to practice and play outside of the county.
