SAN JOSE – Police were at the location of a fatal shooting on the east side of the city on Friday, authorities said.
According to social media posts, police responded to reports of gunfire near Orlando Drive and Waverly Avenue at around 5:18 pm
When officers arrived, they found a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds and took emergency life-saving measures before taking him to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. He has since been identified as Carlos Mercado Hernandez, 28, from San Jose.
Investigators also responded to the scene to look for evidence while other officers blocked traffic along nearby roads. The police did not offer a suspicious description.
The Friday night murder was the 39th of the year in the city and the third this month, compared to 34 in San Jose in 2019. The city has also topped the 10-year average of 37 and is roughly on track , 44 murders recorded. That would add 2020 to the league of 46 kills in 2012 and 47 in 2016, which is the city’s highest total in about 30 years.
According to coverage by this news organization, most categories of crime in the city have moved down in large part due to COVID-19 restrictions and safety advisories, but murders have not been affected and indeed surpass recent years.
