Opera San Jose will ring in the spring with “Love & Secrets: A Domestic Trilogy”. The event premieres on April 15, 2021 and includes three short operas that explore romance and relationships.
First in this trilogy is Wolf-Ferrari’s “Il segreto di Susanna”. The resident artist soprano Vanessa Becerra and the baritone Efrain Solis will perform in the opera under the direction of Joseph Marcheso.
Next up is Ned Rorem’s Four Dialogues, based on the poetry of Frank O’Hara and featuring soprano Marnie Breckenridge and resident tenor Carlos Enrique Santelli.
Finally, Tom Cipullo’s “The Husbands,” directed by Christopher James Ray, will appear. Mezzo Ashley Dixon and baritone Eugene Brancoveanu feature in this 10-minute work.
The performance was recorded at the San Jose Heiman Opera House’s Digital Media Studio, with the company strictly adhering to Santa Clara County’s safety protocols, including testing and social distancing.
“For couples around the world, this lengthy quarantine period has forced romantic relationships into uncharted territory,” said Director General Khori Dastoor, who conceived and curated this original collection of three chamber operas.
“The rhythm of domestic life was disrupted and challenged like never before. Despite persistent physical closeness, feelings of isolation arise, which raise questions about the fundamentals of partnership when each person develops both as an individual and in relation to one another. How do we deal with it when we cannot escape or when losses feel new again? And what are we fighting to just keep to ourselves? ‘Love & Secrets: A Domestic Trilogy’ offers a contemporary, comedic and poignant window into the lives of three couples who face such challenges and have to walk a path forward together. “
