A 40-year-old homeless man from San Jose was arrested Saturday morning in a preschool for animal abuse and vandalism, San Jose police said.
Officials responded to a report of a man who acted erratically and destroyed property at the Play ‘N’ Learn preschool on the 500 block of Massar Avenue around 11:30 a.m.
Identified as George Robles, the suspect attempted to flee when he was tracked down and taken into custody by officers trained by the department’s crisis intervention team.
Robles has inflicted an estimated $ 1,800 damage on the school building and children’s play equipment, police said.
“Further investigation revealed that a 65-pound turtle named Michelangelo was stabbed through its outer shell with a piece of wood and sustained other injuries related to the recent abuse,” police said.
Robles, who was doing a 72-hour emergency mental health exam, was booked for vandalism and animal abuse.
“Abusing an innocent animal is intolerable and needs to be addressed,” Acting Police Chief Dave Tindall said in a statement. “This underscores the need for ongoing collaboration with our mental health professionals. I am grateful for our civil servant crisis intervention training which has resulted in the safe arrest of all concerned.”
