Despite concerns from Santa Clara County’s health officials, the San Jose state soccer team flew to Tucson on Sunday prior to Thursday’s Arizona Bowl matchup against Ball State.
The Spartans had returned to San Jose on December 20, the day after they beat Boise State in the championship game of the Mountain West Conference in Las Vegas. Members of the Spartans in the San Jose area have been ordered to quarantine.
However, departing on Sunday, these members fell three days short of the county’s required 10-day quarantine for anyone entering the county from more than 150 miles. This quarantine was set up to slow the coronavirus surge.
Because of the county’s restrictions on contact sports, the Spartans had been out for two and a half weeks: in Hawaii and the last two weeks in the Las Vegas area. The Spartans could have stayed in Nevada and gone straight to Tucson, but head coach Brent Brennan wanted his players to see their families; Most had not been able to do this since mid-July.
“As the county noted, SJSU is technically in line with the travel policy,” the university said in a statement emailed to The Chronicle on Tuesday. “SJSU spoke to county officials for additional information about our itinerary and how we worked to meet the requirements of the policy.”
Although the district officials were not happy with the Spartans’ trip, the district manager was Dr. Jeff Smith told the Mercury News, “We can’t stop them.”
San Jose State took a charter flight to Tucson.

Hall, a junior, received the conference’s Defensive Player of the Year award. He is the first player in the state of San Jose to receive All-America first-team recognition since the cornerback Dwight Lowery in 2007.
