Topgolf will open doors in north San Jose this week and hire hundreds – East Bay Times
SAN JOSE – Topgolf is slated to open its doors this week in the Alviso neighborhood in north San Jose, offering a tech-driven golfing experience – and several hundred jobs – the company announced on Monday.
The major new venue in San Jose features a tech-driven golfing experience, plus restaurants and a wine bar in its first location in the Bay Area.
“We’re looking to hire up to 600 people in this location alone,” said Travis Miller, director of operations at Topgolf San Jose. “We are actively hiring. We hired about 390 and we want to hire another 150-200. “
The official opening date is Friday, and the new facility will provide a job boost in Silicon Valley after more than a year of bleak economic setbacks from coronavirus-related business shutdowns.
“It’s important for us to be part of this community,” said Miller. “Creating jobs in this area is a great thing.”
Topgolf operates high-tech driving ranges where people can hit golf balls that are equipped with microchips that record distance and accuracy.
Guests can also visualize the flight of their shot using the company’s TopTracer technology, which appeared on the recent network broadcast of The Master’s Tournament.

According to Miller, Topgolf San Jose, along with the company’s Las Vegas location, will be the largest of the 66 or so venues that Topgolf operates worldwide. The new venue is located at 4701 N. First St. in San Jose.
“San Jose and Silicon Valley is an outstanding area,” said Miller. “Tourism will return, businesses will return, people will want to do things. There are great people here in the Bay Area, near Santa Cruz, and this will be a place to have fun. “

The new facility is the first for Topgolf in the Bay Area and the second in California. The other existing top golf location in California is in the city of Roseville, Placer County. Topgolf has broken new ground in two other locations in California: Ontario in San Bernardino County and El Segundo next to Los Angeles.
More than 120 bays are available for hitting golf balls. Each bay is air-conditioned.
“The San Jose venue will feature a third level wine lounge and tasting area in addition to the chef-led menu and drinks in the outdoor bays while you can safely enjoy the fun outdoors,” said Topgolf.
According to Miller, Topgolf San Jose was designed as an environmentally friendly building to be LEED certified.
“It’s designed to be energy efficient, with solar panels on the roof,” Miller said. “We also use a greener type of lawn. We have spots all over the windows so that the birds don’t fly into the glass. “
At the new location in San Jose, guests can play a simulator of the legendary Pebble Beach Golf Links in Monterey County and play a golf-themed game of Angry Birds.
Management, administration, sales, server, bartender, coach, food and drink runners, guest service, kitchen and maintenance were among the jobs that were classified as available in the last few weeks in the career section on the Topgolf- Website.
“The opening of Topgolf is another hopeful sign that San Jose is on the verge of a strong recovery as we emerge from this pandemic,” San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo said in a recent interview about the venue’s upcoming opening day .
As with countless development efforts, the economic uncertainties sparked by the coronavirus delayed the opening date for Topgolf San Jose.
“We look forward to being in this area,” said Miller. “There were many challenges and many difficulties. We look forward to getting things started. It will take a long time to get to this venue. “
