What’s trending on the San Jose meals scene?

Food trends come and go. So how can you tell which tastes are trending this minute?

We took a data-driven look at the question and used Yelp to find out which restaurants were in the spotlight this month.

To see who made the list, we looked at the San Jose businesses by category on Yelp and counted the number of reviews they received. Instead of just comparing them based on the number of reviews, we calculated a percentage increase in reviews over the past month and tracked companies that have continuously increased their review volume to identify statistically significant outliers compared to past performance.

This popular spot that has been counting fish and chips as of January 2019 is trending compared to other companies listed as “Seafood” on Yelp.

Across the city, seafood spots saw an average revaluation increase of 1.1% last month, while Slapfish saw an 11.9% increase and consistently maintained a mixed 3.5-star rating. In addition, the number of reviews of Slapfish increased by more than 220% from month to month.

It’s not the only outlier in the seafood category: Claw Shack saw ratings rise 8.5%, and Poke House and Mariscos Costa Alegre rose 6% and 5.7%, respectively.

Located at 5297 Prospect Road, Suite 40 in West San Jose, Slapfish offers lobster rolls, New England clam soup, and fish and chips.

Great duper burger

Whether or not you’ve heard about the Super Duper Burgers in West San Jose, the traditional American spot that sells burgers and more is a hot topic according to Yelp review data.

While companies rated “American (Traditional)” on Yelp saw their new reviews increase by an average of 0.9% over the past month, Super Duper Burgers saw new reviews increase by 7.6% and over that period maintained a strong four star rating.

There are even more trends in the traditional San Jose American scene: 7 Stars Bar & Grill saw ratings increase 4% and Cafe Rosalena increased 0.7%.

Super Duper Burgers has been open at 5399 Prospect Road since December 2018 and offers garlic fries, chicken burgers, milkshakes and much more.

The tostadas in downtown San Jose are also making waves. Well established at E. Santa Clara St. 304, Suite A, since June 2019, the Mexican restaurant for breakfast and brunch has seen new ratings rise 11.7% last month, compared to an average rating increase of 1 , 6% for all businesses tagged “Mexicans” on Yelp.

There is more than one hot spot trend in San Jose’s Mexican category: Chipotle Mexican Grill saw ratings rise 2.1%.

Tostadas offers shrimp, chorizo, chicken and crab tostadas, as well as tamales, burritos, cocktails and much more. For the past month, it has maintained a strong four-star rating among Yelpers.

Tostadas is open from Sunday to Thursday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. and on Fridays and Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
