What’s trending on the San Jose meals scene?

Wondering where the San Jose insiders eat and drink? It’s easy to spot lines coming out the door, but some underlying trends are harder to spot.

We took a data-driven look at the question and used Yelp to find out which restaurants were on everyone’s lips this month.

To see who made the list, we looked at the San Jose businesses by category on Yelp and counted the number of reviews they received. Instead of just comparing them based on the number of reviews, we calculated a percentage increase in reviews over the past month and tracked companies that have continuously increased their review volume to identify statistically significant outliers compared to past performance.

Open since June, this Mexican breakfast and brunch place is trending compared to other companies listed as “Breakfast & Brunch” on Yelp.

Across the city, breakfast and brunch spots saw an average increase in new ratings of 1.8% last month, while Tostadas saw a dramatic 154.1% increase and consistently maintained a strong four-star rating.

Located in Suite A in downtown San Jose at 304 E. Santa Clara St., Tostadas offers stuffed poblano chillies, red and green enchiladas, steak fajitas, and more. The sides include handmade tortillas, tamales, and beans.

7 Leaves Cafe

Whether or not you’ve heard of West San Joses 7 Leaves Cafe, where to get bubble tea, coffee and more is a hot topic according to Yelp review data.

While companies rated “Coffee & Tea” on Yelp saw their new reviews increase an average of 2.2% over the past month, 7 Leaves Cafe saw and retained an 80.6% increase in new reviews over this period a superior four-star rating.

There are even more trends in the San Jose coffee and tea scene: Oh My Boba, its ratings rose 21.7%.

The 7 Leaves Cafe has been on Saratoga Ave since May. 375 and offers milk tea, Vietnamese iced coffee, matcha tea, macarons for housemaids and much more. Complement drinks with additives such as honey boba, aloe vera, grass jelly and sea cream.

Mesquite and oak

Mesquite and Oak in downtown San Jose is also making waves. The traditional American spot, which has been open at 856 N. 13th St. since January 2018 and serves grilled dishes and sandwiches, saw new ratings rise 5.4% last month, compared to an average rating increase of 1, 2% for all businesses tagged “American (Traditional)” on Yelp.

Mesquite and Oak offers brisket, ribs, hot links, pulled chicken and pork, as well as baked beans, coleslaw, and mac and cheese. Last month, Yelpers received a solid 4.5-star rating.

Lucy’s Mexican Grill

Branham / Pearl’s Lucy’s Mexican Grill is numerically the liveliest Mexican spot in town.

The Mexican spot, which opened at 615 Blossom Hill Road in 2017, increased its number of new reviews by 6.7% in the past month, an outlier compared to the mean number of new reviews of 2.2% for the Yelp category ” Mexican”. It topped the previous month by getting 1.4 times more reviews than expected based on past performance.

It’s not the only outlier in the Mexican category: El Camaron De Sinaloa saw ratings rise 4.4%.
