We took a data-driven look at the question and, using Yelp, derived which restaurants had the most talk that month.

To see who made the list, we looked at the San Jose businesses by category on Yelp and counted the number of reviews they received. Instead of just comparing them based on the number of reviews, we calculated a percentage increase in reviews over the past month and tracked companies that continually increase their review volume to identify statistically significant outliers compared to past performance.

Open since 2016, this Vietnamese and Asian fusion spot is trending compared to other companies listed as “Asian Fusion” on Yelp.

Citywide, Asian fusion spots saw new ratings rise an average of 2.3 percent last month, while SimpleViet saw a 46.3 percent increase, with a slight downward trend from a rating of 4.5 stars a month ago to four stars today was recorded.

It’s not the only outlier in the Asian fusion category: Ginza Sushi saw ratings jump 11.8 percent.

Whether or not you’ve heard of Evergreen North’s Claw Shack, the Cajun / Creole spot that sells chicken wings and seafood is a hot topic according to Yelp review data.

While companies rated “Seafood” on Yelp saw an average increase in new reviews of 2.4 percent over the past month, Claw Shack saw new reviews increase by 13.5 percent over that period and maintained a superior 4 , 5 star rating at. It significantly outperformed the previous month by receiving 2.0 times more reviews than expected based on its previous performance.

There are even more trends in the San Jose fish scene: SJ Crawfish saw ratings jump 6.3 percent.

East San Jose’s Back A Yard is also making waves. Open since 2017 on the 1011 Capitol Expy with BBQ grills and more, the established Caribbean spot saw new ratings rise by 5.9 percent last month, compared to an average rating increase of 2.3 percent for everyone Businesses tagged “Barbeque” “on Yelp. In addition, Back A Yard’s reviews increased more than 140 percent month over month.

Back A Yard offers jerk chicken, barbecue ribs, curry goat, and more. For the past month, it has maintained a strong 4.5-star rating among Yelpers.
