At least five churches and local nonprofits are serving Thanksgiving meals in San Jose this week with the help of individual donations and local food banks like Second Harvest of Silicon Valley.
“Second Harvest acquires groceries from a variety of sources, some of which are donated, others purchased and then distributed to neighborhoods in Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties,” said Diane Baker Hayward, spokeswoman for Second Harvest of Silicon Valley.
The food bank has distributed groceries and non-perishable foods to hundreds of nonprofit groups, including churches, schools, and soup kitchens. Partner organizations include Martha’s Kitchen and CityTeam, said Hayward, both of whom plan to serve turkey dinner this week.
“We’ll be serving warm Thanksgiving meals on Thursday from 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm,” said CityTeam chief Reynold Stewart. “It will be a traditional Thanksgiving meal of turkey, stuffing, gravy, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, and a pumpkin pie for dessert.”

“I don’t know where people get this information from, that we reserve seats. We’ve never done that for Thanksgiving, ”he said.
