Who Serves Free Thanksgiving Meals in San Jose?

At least five churches and local nonprofits are serving Thanksgiving meals in San Jose this week with the help of individual donations and local food banks like Second Harvest of Silicon Valley.

“Second Harvest acquires groceries from a variety of sources, some of which are donated, others purchased and then distributed to neighborhoods in Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties,” said Diane Baker Hayward, spokeswoman for Second Harvest of Silicon Valley.

The food bank has distributed groceries and non-perishable foods to hundreds of nonprofit groups, including churches, schools, and soup kitchens. Partner organizations include Martha’s Kitchen and CityTeam, said Hayward, both of whom plan to serve turkey dinner this week.

“We’ll be serving warm Thanksgiving meals on Thursday from 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm,” said CityTeam chief Reynold Stewart. “It will be a traditional Thanksgiving meal of turkey, stuffing, gravy, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, and a pumpkin pie for dessert.”

On Thanksgiving, residents can expect a complimentary meal in a to-go container at the back door of the CityTeam kitchen at 580 Charles St., San Jose.

Martha’s Kitchen is also serving out pre-booked meals at 311 Willow St., San Jose starting at 4:00 p.m. on November 24th and November 25th. The kitchen will reopen on November 30th.

Kevin Patterson, Martha’s Kitchen manager, said a lot of people called and asked how to reserve a plate, but the kitchen doesn’t require registration.

“I don’t know where people get this information from, that we reserve seats. We’ve never done that for Thanksgiving, ”he said.

St. Joseph’s Family Center in Gilroy will be handing out hot meals to the homeless on Thanksgiving between noon and 2:00 p.m., said Vicky Martin, St. Joseph Family Center’s ward director.

“People can find us through the gym in the kitchen at St. Mary Parish on 11th First St. Gilroy,” she said.

The center will also be picked up on November 8th at 8:00 am and 2:30 pm at 7950 Church St., Gilroy.

Sacred Heart is serving Thanksgiving meals at 1381 South First St. through November 24th at 6:00 p.m. and offering walk-in meals through November 25th at 4:00 p.m.

Loaves & Fishes Family Kitchen, a San Jose-based nonprofit that serves 1 million meals a year, will add an hour to its service and increase the capacity of meals for Thanksgiving, said spokeswoman Gisela Bushey.

The meal, which includes turkey, yams, filling, and green beans, is served on Thanksgiving at the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Vietnam at 1066 South Second St. from 2:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
